6TH GRADE ELECTIVE CLASSES

CHORUS (6TH GRADE)

This course is designed for students interested in a singing/performance class. Students will participate in music contests and concerts for school and the community. A variety of music styles will be studied along with music theory and vocal technique.A high standard of concert style performance will be required.

BAND (6TH GRADE)

Sixth grade students have an opportunity to sign up for band! Students interested in band must decide between Beginning Woodwind or Beginning Brass and Percussion. Band classes require each student to maintain a working musical instrument. Information will be given to students and parent/guardians about how to acquire these instruments. Placement in flute or percussion class will require a test which will be given to interested students at the conclusion of their 5th grade year.

BEGINNING WOODWIND / PERCUSSION (BAND) (6TH GRADE)

This class is intended for those who are beginning on a woodwind or percussion instrument for the first time. The instrument choices will consist of the flute and clarinet or percussion. Students who wish to play oboe, bassoon, or saxophone will need to enroll in this class and begin on the flute or clarinet. The directors will evaluate and speak with every student interested to help insure placement of each student of the instrument most likely to guarantee success.

BRASS (BAND) (6TH GRADE)

This class is intended for those who are beginning on a brass instrument for the first time. The instrument choices for this class will consist of the trumpet, or trombone. The directors will evaluate and speak with every student interested to help insure placement of each student on the instrument most likely to guarantee success.

EXPLORE (6TH GRADE)

The explore class is assigned to several sixth-grade teachers who concentrate their lessons on a particular theme or subject matter. Therefore, one student’s explore class will be completing different assignments than another explore class (depending on the teacher). Each of these classes last one semester, so each student will have two different explore classes throughout the year. A variety of concepts will be studied including some the following: reading and math skills, study skills, geography, art, science, among other discussions and activities. All Explore courses are listed below:

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION I (6TH GRADE)

This class serves as an introduction to TE in the 7th and 8th grade as well as to vocational education classes that can be taken at an area technology center beginning the junior year of high school. The following are some examples are areas of instruction that may be taught: drafting, laser technology, electronics, problem solving, screen printing, career search, aerospace, animation, audio visual and robotics.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (CO-ED) (6TH GRADE)

This course, introduces the basic rules and skills of sports and activities. The first day or two will be spent in the classroom introducing a particular sport, with a written test being given at the end of each section. Students will be required to dress out and participate daily.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS (6TH GRADE)

Students will learn about different factors that influence health and wellness through diet, nutrition, and physical activity. This class will provide students will lessons on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and social and emotional health.

CREATIVE WRITING (6TH GRADE)

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their own writing talents. Students will study different genres of writing including, but not limited to: short stories, poetry, nonfiction, journals, memoirs, mysteries, fairy tales, and comics.

HUNTING AND FISHING (6TH GRADE)

Students will study the basic techniques of hunting and fishing. This course will introduce students to the equipment, techniques, and fundamentals of hunting and fishing.

ENGINEERING (6TH GRADE)

Students will learn the basic knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts including engineering problem solving, mechanical design, and the engineering planning process.

WEB DESIGN AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION (6TH GRADE)

Students will learn the basics of computer programming through project-based experiences with website design, app development, and cybersecurity.

WORLD CULTURES (6TH GRADE)

Students will learn about cultures around the world by studying the people, development, standards of living, belief systems, systems of government, economic factors, food, language, art, and pop cultures of major societies across the globe.

INVESTIGATING FACS (6TH GRADE)

Students will discover skills and explore topics needed for healthy personal development. Topics may include values, ethics, leadership, goal-setting, decision-making, problem-solving, dealing with emotions, learning to cook, good grooming, and personal safety.

CHARACTER COUNTS (6TH GRADE)

Students will explore the pillars of character: trustworthiness, fairness, respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship. Students will participate in community service activities and character-building curriculum.

7TH GRADE ELECTIVE CLASSES

ART (7TH GRADE)

Students will learn to express their knowledge of balance, form, color, and space relationships in both two and three dimensional art. They will experiment in basic color theories and mediums, explore a variety of drawing materials and techniques, and create constructions in plaster. Crafts such as weaving and pop art projects will be offered. Students learn art history as well as contemporary arts of today through studies and activities.

STEM EDUCATION (7TH GRADE)

STEM Education is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics class where students will design, develop, and create solutions for STEM practices. Students will actively engage in project-based learning involving critical thinking in the areas of STEM.

ENGINEERING (7TH GRADE)

An engineering minded applied math and science course where engineering principles are put to the test through projects. This curriculum involves a hands-on approach in which problem-solving projects will help student engage and learn engineering basics.

TWEEN-LIFE (7TH GRADE) (TEEN LIVING SKILLS)

This is a family and consumer science class in which students are introduced to the study of relationships, child-care, personal space, consumer issues, nutrition health and wellness, personal care, clothing management, and career exploration. The application of basic skills such as math, science, and language arts are included in all these areas.

7TH OR 8TH GRADE ELECTIVE CLASSES

ATHLETIC & COMPETITIVE SPORTS:

These courses are competitive sports for boys and girls. If the class is for the entire year, students are expected to participate throughout the year. In both year and semester courses, students are expected to dress out and participate each and every day. Practices for competitive sports are held before and/or after school hours and a physical is required before participation may begin. Students must be passing all classes to remain in athletics.

Students who wish to play the tuba, French horn, or percussion will need to enroll in this class and begin on the trumpet, trombone, baritone, or bells. The directors will evaluate and speak with every student interested to help insure placement of each student on the instrument most likely to guarantee success.

WOODWIND (BAND)

Woodwind is for those students who have completed Beginning Woodwind.

BRASS/PERCUSSION (BAND)

Brass/Percussion is for those students who have completed Beginning Brass/Percussion.

CHORUS

Chorus is designed for men/ladies interested in a singing/performance class. Students will participate in music contests and concerts for school and the community. A variety of musical styles will be studied along with music theory and vocal technique. A high standard of concert style performance will be required.

Physical Education is a course for students who are not enrolled in any Athletic Sports. This course, presented in sections of one to four weeks, introduces the basic rules and skills of sports and activities. The first day or two will be spent in the classroom introducing a particular sport, with a written test being given at the end of each section. Students will be required to dress out an participate daily.

CURRENT EVENTS

Students will learn about the events that shape our world, nation, state, and local community. This will be done through project-based learning in reading, video, lecture, discussion, research, and personal experience.

GREENHOUSE AG

Greenhouse Ag is designed for students to get the opportunity to get their hands dirty and in the process learn lessons in botany, plant growth, landscaping, crop production, and plant and greenhouse management.

INTRO TO SPANISH

Intro to Spanish is offered for one semester. This course prepares students for Spanish I (or a trip to Mexico!). Learn many new Spanish words in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Students will learn by focusing on the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

PERFORMING ARTS

Theater-Students will be introduced to the basics of performing arts. Students will learn about the elements of drama and use creative drama techniques and theater vocabulary to conduct speeches, group presentations, and script and journal writings.

READING FOR PLEASURE

will positively promote and support literacy and critical thinking by providing a rigorous and relevant environment for advanced students through analytical acquisitions and self-analysis of deeper reading and writing.

MUSICAL KEYBOARDING

students will be introduced to playing the piano and read music. Students will learns the basics of music and basic keyboard concepts. Students will learn the basics of playing the piano.

YEARBOOK

Students learn the basic skills of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines, digital photography, desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production.

8TH GRADE ELECTIVE CLASSES

ART (8TH GRADE)

STEM Education is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and will foster a learning environment in which students are challenged to produce ideas, objects, and structures using concepts from math, science, engineering, and technology,

ENGINEERING (8TH GRADE)

Students will combine resources to create systems and gain knowledge of how technological systems work. Students will explore, design, analyze, and evaluate engineering systems. Students will learn how to approach problems and create solutions through participation in hands-on engineering projects.

FACS (8TH GRADE)

Life management is a course that introduces students to personal management, clothing management, resource management, childcare and parenting skills, nutrition and food management, health and wellness, relationships, as well as home and personal space. The student may be required to purchase individual materials for one or two projects (costs for these projects may vary). Students may join the state/national organization: FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). Students will be given the opportunity to pay for FCCLA dues by participating in a fundraiser.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT ELECTIVE CLASSES

ART I (YEARLONG)

This is a more in-depth art class which will discuss various famous artist as well as art techniques. Offered for a full year.

COMPUTER SCIENCE I (YEARLONG)

Students will build on their knowledge, skills, and abilities basic of computer science concepts.Students will learn components of computing systems, networks and the internet, data analysis, algorithms and programming, and the impacts of computing.

COMPUTER SCIENCE II (YEARLONG)

This course will provide a pathway for greater specialization of Computer Science for students who want to pursue certification or potential collegiate major or minor.Students will learn components of computing systems, networks and the internet, data analysis, algorithms and programming, and the impacts of computing.
